Often, our childhood mythologies give us clues about our adult work. For my sister and me, Catonia (from the Hebrew word qaton<\/em>, “small”) was a tiny kingdom, based on our rural Michigan property, that represented agrarian values, justice, and peace. This blog is primarily about envisioning a Christianity that is less toxic to humanity. I still aspire to write as a free Catonian. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

George MacDonald<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of my primary inspirations is the theology of George MacDonald (1824-1905) the Scottish preacher, poet, novelist, and pioneering fantasy writer. Everything that I write is more or less directly influenced by him. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Kierkegaard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

My other nineteenth-century muse is Kierkegaard. This blog explores the intersection of his thought with George MacDonald’s, especially in his quest to hold his face to what Life requires of us.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Being a Teacher<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I teach math in a small-town high school. The effort to face my own self doubt in that role, and to help my students face theirs, influences my writing. I don’t love politics, but I care about the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
